Plain English

What we hold

Your name and any former names, date of birth, address and contact details, plus a short record of who holds your will, their telephone number, the date the will was made, the date they received it, and who the executors are. We do not hold the will itself and we never ask what is in it.

What a search reveals

Nothing but a yes or no. Anyone can search free of charge using surname, date of birth and address. We never give out the holder's details. After a successful match, the searcher can complete a short request form; we then email their name and contact details to the person holding the will, ask them to make contact, and tell the registrant that a request has been made.

Telling the holder

Where the will is held by a family member, friend or trustee, we email them to confirm that they have been named as the holder, and to explain that if someone searches the register for that will, the searcher's details will be passed to them to action. Solicitors are not sent that first email, as they hold wills as a matter of business, but they are passed any search requests.

If a subscription lapses

If a renewal payment fails, we remind you after one week and again after two weeks. If it is still unpaid after four weeks, the record is removed from the register and deleted.

One register, four doors

ScottishWillRegister.co.uk, EnglishWillRegister.co.uk, WelshWillRegister.co.uk and IrishWillRegister.co.uk are all doors into the same register. Wherever you register, a search from any of the four will find your record.
